Case Study One - Assisted Living

An assisted living project focusing on accessibility, security, personalised control and ease of use

Project Brief

This project involved designing and installing smart home automation for a disabled woman. The scope of the project included implementing various smart technologies such as smart lighting, heating and cooling systems, automated doors and windows, multiroom audio, distributed video, access control, alarm systems, CCTV, and all necessary electrical work.

Being disabled, the homeowner faced several challenges in her daily life that required special attention. The objective was to create a living environment that improved quality of life by providing greater independence, comfort, and convenience through the integration of smart technologies.

The System

KNX was chosen for integrating the lighting, heating, windows, and door systems as it allows for seamless control and provides flexibility and interoperability, enabling the client to independently manage these functionalities through a centralized interface or in this case the Control4 mobile app.

Control4 was chosen as the user interface and audio/video control system for the smart home as it offers intuitive control interfaces and enables seamless integration of various audio and video sources. It allows the client to manage and control audio distribution and video playback throughout her home.

The Home Owners' Comments

“The aim of the project was to build a wheelchair accessible house for me as I’m a permanent wheelchair user. The main aims were to allow me access to every part of the house, full use of everywhere so I can complete simple tasks such as opening and closing windows independently and to make sure the house was safe and secure”.

“Throughout the house I knew I needed electric doors, windows and curtains as I had found these difficult in the past. I wanted safety measures so I know that I can be secure if I am in the house alone but allow others access in case of emergency. This was very important because we knew the house had thick concrete walls and phone signal would be non – existent, so contacting for help was a top priority. Another priority was to control the temperature of the house easily in different rooms and to control televisions and audio devices throughout the house, turn lights on and off, control the electric gates and doors easily and have a CCTV system connected to our phones.”

The Home Owners' Summary

“We have lived in the house for over a year now and have found that all of my needs have not only been met but I have more options than I was aware of while researching automation in homes.

There are several ways to control all the electric doors, windows, curtains, lights, tvs, music etc by using phones, switches on walls and Control4 tablets and remotes, all of which have given me independence in my home.

The most important part of the automation is the security system; cameras, intercom, sensors within the house and heat and trespasser alarms have given me enormous peace of mind.”

“By using KNX for lighting, heating, windows, and doors, Control4 for the user interface and audio/video control, Texecom for the alarm system, and Luma for CCTV, we ensured a robust and integrated smart home solution.
